The phone went in the lake, the toilet, the washing machine β and now it's dead. The phone itself you can replace. What has people calling us at midnight is what's on it: years of photos, the videos of the kids, texts from someone who's gone. So let's answer the real question first: yes, in most cases the data on a water-dead phone is recoverable β because of how phones store data, and provided nobody makes it worse first. Here's how it actually works.
Why a Dead Phone Usually Doesn't Mean Dead Data
Your photos don't live "in the phone" in some diffuse way β they live in a specific flash-memory chip (NAND) soldered to the logic board. Water rarely destroys that chip. What water kills is the stuff around it: charging circuits, power-management chips, backlight drivers, corroded connectors. The library is intact; the building's electricity failed.
Data recovery, then, is really board repair with a narrower goal: we don't need the phone to be your daily driver again β we need it alive long enough to boot once and offload everything. That distinction matters, because a phone "not worth fixing" as a phone is very often worth fixing as a data source.
What Recovery Actually Involves
- Teardown and decontamination. The board comes out, the battery is disconnected, and corroded areas are cleaned β ultrasonic cleaning in specialized solution strips out the mineral residue that keeps eating traces after the water is gone.
- Microscope diagnosis. We trace which power rails are shorted or dead and find the failed components β often a handful of tiny capacitors, a charging IC, or a power-management chip.
- Micro-soldering repair. Failed components get replaced at the board level. This is the specialty work β the same discipline as our console HDMI repairs, at an even smaller scale.
- Controlled boot and extraction. Once the board powers, the phone is booted (sometimes with a donor screen or battery attached), unlocked with your passcode, and everything is transferred: photos, videos, messages, notes, contacts, app data.
On modern iPhones and Androids, full-disk encryption means the NAND chip alone is useless without the rest of that phone's board β the encryption keys live in the processor. That's why "just pull the memory chip" isn't the path anymore, and why keeping the original board repairable is everything.
What Affects Your Odds
- Time. Fresh water damage handled within days has excellent odds. A phone that's been sitting dead in a drawer for a year is harder β but genuinely not hopeless; we've recovered those too.
- Liquid type. Clean fresh water is kindest. Salt water, pool water, and toilet water are aggressively corrosive; sugary drinks leave conductive residue. Salt water is the emergency case β hours matter.
- Power exposure. A phone that shorted and died instantly often fares better than one that limped along being charged for a week while corrosion spread under power.
- Physical state. Water plus a car-crushed frame is a tougher (but still sometimes possible) job than water alone.
iPhone vs. Android: does it change the odds?
Not much β the physics of corrosion don't care about the logo. Both platforms encrypt storage and tie the keys to the original board, so the recovery path is the same: revive the board, boot, extract. The practical differences are in parts and documentation: iPhones benefit from an enormous donor-parts ecosystem, while some Android models (especially budget ones) have scarcer schematics and donor boards, which can stretch turnaround. Either way, the phone's passcode is required β encryption means nobody, including us, can pull data without it.
What To Do Right Now
