Spilled Liquid on Your MacBook? Here's Exactly What to Do

Coffee, water, wine, seltzer — whatever just hit your MacBook, the next ten minutes matter more than anything else you do. Liquid damage isn't an instant death sentence; it's a countdown. Boards that reach a repair bench within a day or two have excellent survival odds. Boards that got the rice treatment for a week, or kept getting powered on "to check if it still works," are a different story. Here's the exact protocol.

The First 60 Seconds

1. Shut it down. Now. Hold the power button (Touch ID key) until the screen goes black. Don't save documents, don't close apps gracefully — a lost document is recoverable, a shorted board is a project. Every second of current flowing through wet circuitry does damage.
2. Unplug the charger and disconnect anything in the ports — hubs, drives, everything.
3. Flip it upside down immediately, opened into a tent or upside-down V shape over a towel, keyboard facing down. Gravity is your friend: you want liquid draining away from the logic board, not pooling on it.
4. Blot what you can see. Dab the keyboard, ports, and seams with a paper towel. Don't wipe side-to-side — that pushes liquid into the seams.

What NOT to Do (Every One of These Kills Boards)

• Don't turn it back on to "see if it's okay." This is the number one killer. The MacBook may work fine for minutes, hours, even days while corrosion silently eats the board — and each power-on while damp risks the short that ends it.
• Don't plug in the charger. Even off, a plugged-in MacBook keeps portions of the board energized. USB-C charging circuitry is one of the most common casualties for exactly this reason.
• Don't use a hair dryer or put it near a heater. Heat drives liquid deeper and cooks components; it also warps keycaps and adhesives.
• Don't put it in rice. Rice does almost nothing for liquid inside a sealed aluminum chassis — the liquid is trapped against the board, and the days you spend waiting are days corrosion works uninterrupted. Rice dust in the ports is a bonus problem.

Why Fast Professional Treatment Changes the Outcome

Proper liquid-damage treatment isn't drying — it's decontamination. At the bench, that means opening the machine, disconnecting the battery first (it keeps the board energized even when "off"), then inspecting the logic board under the microscope, ultrasonic-cleaning affected areas in specialized solution to strip out mineral residue, and replacing any components that already corroded or shorted — micro-soldering work we've done at Geek Guys since 2016.

The timeline matters because corrosion is progressive:

• Within 24–48 hours: best case. Often the board just needs cleaning; component damage is minimal and localized.
• Within a week: still very good odds, but we're usually replacing a few corroded components along with the cleaning.
• Weeks later, after it "worked fine" then died: repairable more often than not, but now it's a diagnostic hunt across a widely corroded board.

A note on warranties and AppleCare+

Standard Apple warranties don't cover liquid damage at all — there are moisture indicators inside the chassis that turn red on contact, so it will be detected. AppleCare+ does cover accidental liquid damage for a service fee, so if you carry it, that's a legitimate route. Just know that Apple's liquid-damage service is typically a major-parts replacement, not board rescue — if there are files on the machine you can't lose, get the data question answered before anything is swapped.

What About Your Files?

Here's the part that surprises people: on modern MacBooks (2016 and later), the storage is soldered to the logic board. There's no drive to pull out and plug into another computer. If the board dies and stays dead, your data is locked inside it — which makes board repair and data recovery the same discipline.
