Why Is My PS5 So Loud? Overheating, Fan Noise, and the Real Fix

The PS5 launched famously quiet — that was one of its selling points over the jet-engine PS4. So when your PS5 starts roaring during games, radiating heat like a space heater, or flat-out shutting down with an overheating warning, something has changed inside the console. Here's what's actually happening, what you can safely do yourself, and what a proper thermal service involves.

How the PS5 Cools Itself (and Why It Stops Working)

The PS5 pulls air in through the sides, pushes it across a large heatsink with a 120mm fan, and exhausts it out the back. The processor transfers its heat into that heatsink through liquid metal — a thermally superior but finicky alternative to normal thermal paste. Three things degrade this system over time:

• Dust. The intake channels and heatsink fins pack up with dust, pet hair, and carpet fibers. Airflow drops, temperatures rise, and the fan spins harder to compensate. This is by far the most common cause of a loud PS5 — consoles on carpet or in enclosed TV cabinets get there fastest.
• Liquid metal migration. On consoles stored vertically, there are documented cases of liquid metal slowly creeping to one edge of the chip die, leaving part of the processor poorly contacted. Result: higher temps even with a clean heatsink.
• Fan bearing wear. A fan that grinds, buzzes, or rattles at low speed has worn bearings and will only get louder.

What the Symptoms Tell You

Loud fan under load, but no shutdowns

Early-stage dust buildup. The cooling still works — it's just working harder. This is the ideal time to act, because you're one summer away from the next stage.

"Your PS5 is too hot" warnings or sudden shutdowns

The console is hitting thermal protection limits. Sustained operation this hot stresses the solder joints under the main chips and shortens the console's life. Stop marathon sessions until it's addressed.

Grinding or buzzing noise even at idle

Mechanical fan noise, not airflow noise. The fan needs cleaning at minimum, possibly replacement.

What You Can Safely Do at Home

1. Fix the placement. Give the console at least 4 inches of clearance on all sides, get it off carpet, and out of closed cabinets. Rear exhaust needs somewhere to go.
2. Vacuum the intakes. With the console off, run a vacuum nozzle along the side intake grilles to pull out surface dust. (Vacuum at the vents is fine; blowing compressed air into the console just relocates dust deeper.)
3. Remove the side panels and clean the dust catchers. Sony designed the white panels to pop off without tools, and there are two dust-collection ports you can vacuum out underneath. This is user-serviceable and doesn't void anything.
4. Check the room, not just the console. A PS5 in a 85°F attic gameroom in July will run loud no matter how clean it is.

What a Professional Thermal Service Involves

Panel-off vacuuming only reaches the outer chambers. The heatsink fins and fan blades — where the real blockage lives — require a full teardown: removing the shielding, pulling the fan, cleaning the entire heatsink stack, and reassembling with correct torque on the board screws. If the liquid metal needs attention, that's a step further: lifting the heatsink, cleaning the old liquid metal off the die completely, and reapplying it with the containment seal intact.

That last part is why we tell people not to DIY it. Liquid metal is electrically conductive — a stray bead that escapes onto the motherboard shorts whatever it touches. Heat and the Bigger Picture

Chronic overheating doesn't just annoy your ears — it's a leading contributor to the board-level failures we repair every week. Heat cycling fatigues solder joints and stresses power circuitry; many consoles that arrive with the three-beeps-and-no-boot failure have a case full of dust and a history of thermal shutdowns. Keeping the cooling system healthy is genuinely the cheapest insurance your console can get.
