PS5 Turns On But No Signal to the TV? Run This Checklist

The console powers up. The light comes on, the fan spins, you can even hear the disc drive click — but the TV just sits there saying "No Signal." This is the single most common PS5 problem that comes through our door, and the good news is that the cause is almost always one of a short list of suspects. Work through this checklist in order and you'll either fix it on your couch or know exactly what's broken.

First, Rule Out Everything That Isn't the PS5

Roughly a third of "broken PS5s" we get calls about turn out to be a cable, a TV input, or a receiver setting. Five minutes of elimination saves you a trip.

1. Confirm the TV input

Obvious, but check it properly: cycle through every HDMI input with the PS5 on, and give each one a few seconds to sync. Some TVs relabel inputs, and HDMI-CEC auto-switching sometimes jumps to the wrong device.

2. Swap the HDMI cable

HDMI cables fail more often than people expect — especially at 4K/120Hz bandwidth, where a marginal cable that worked fine on a PS4 falls over. Test with a known-good Ultra High Speed cable if you have one, but any working HDMI cable will do for a signal test.

3. Try a different HDMI port on the TV — then a different TV

TV HDMI ports die too. Move the cable to another port. If still nothing, carry the PS5 to another TV or monitor. If it displays fine elsewhere, your console is healthy and the TV needs attention.

4. Remove anything in the middle

Soundbars, AV receivers, HDMI switches, and capture cards all add handshake failure points. Connect the PS5 straight into the TV and test bare.

Reset the PS5's Video Output in Safe Mode

If the console displays nothing on any TV with any cable, the next step is forcing it back to a basic video mode. The PS5 can get stuck outputting a resolution or HDR/HDCP mode the display won't accept — common after a TV change, a firmware update, or a power outage mid-session.

1. Power the PS5 fully off (hold the power button until it double-beeps and shuts down — not Rest Mode).
2. Hold the power button down. You'll hear one beep immediately — keep holding until a second beep about 7 seconds later, then release.
3. If Safe Mode appears on screen, select Change Video Output → change resolution/HDCP settings, then restart.

If Safe Mode shows up on your TV, congratulations — your HDMI hardware works, and a settings change should hold. If the screen stays black even in Safe Mode, the problem is physical.

The Usual Culprit: a Damaged HDMI Port

The PS5's HDMI port is soldered directly to the motherboard with tiny surface-mount pads, and it takes real abuse: cables yanked at an angle, consoles pulled off shelves by the cord, kids tripping over cables, or plugs forced in upside down. Over hundreds of insertions the pins wear, bend, or the port's solder joints crack loose from the board.

Symptoms that point to the port itself:

• Signal cuts in and out when the cable is wiggled
• Picture only appears when the cable is held at an angle
• Worked fine until someone moved the console, then never again
• Visible bent or crushed pins inside the port

Less often, the failure is one step deeper: the HDMI transmitter chip (a retimer IC that sits behind the port) or its tiny supporting components fail — often after a lightning storm or a surge through the TV. Either way, this is a micro-soldering repair, not a part swap.
