Crackling, popping, rustling static β usually in one ear, usually worse with noise cancellation on, and often loudest when you're walking or moving your jaw. AirPods Pro crackle is so common that Apple ran an official service program for it on the first generation. Some causes you can fix in five minutes; others are physical and need service. Here's how to tell which one you've got.
Start With the Software Suspects
Crackling that appears on both AirPods, or comes and goes with location, is usually a connection problem rather than a hardware one.
- Check for firmware updates. Apple has fixed multiple crackling bugs in AirPods firmware over the years. Firmware installs itself when the AirPods are in the case, charging, near your iPhone with Bluetooth on β leave them that way for 30 minutes. You can verify the version in Settings β Bluetooth β (i) next to your AirPods.
- Rule out Bluetooth interference. Crackling only at your desk, near a microwave, or in a specific room points to 2.4GHz interference. Test somewhere else. Crackling only while the phone is in a back pocket with your body blocking the signal is the same story.
- Forget and re-pair. Settings β Bluetooth β Forget This Device, then hold the case button and pair fresh. This clears more audio weirdness than it should.
- Test with a different source device. If they crackle on your iPhone but not your iPad, the problem is the phone's Bluetooth stack, not the AirPods.
The Hardware Causes
Debris in the drivers and mesh
Earwax, dust, and skin oils work through the mesh and sit against the driver. The result is muffled sound with crackle on bass notes. Careful cleaning helps: remove the silicone tips (rinse those in plain water), then clean the exposed mesh with a dry soft brush and dry cotton swab. Never poke the mesh, and never use liquids on the speaker openings.
The rattle/crackle that moves with your jaw
If crackle syncs with chewing, talking, or footsteps β especially with ANC on β the classic culprit is a failing driver or a cracked internal housing letting the noise-cancellation mics hear things they shouldn't. First-generation AirPods Pro were notorious for this; Apple's service program covered affected units for three years after sale. Worth checking your coverage before paying anyone.
Moisture and sweat damage
Workout AirPods crackle. Sweat is salty and corrosive, and AirPods Pro are water resistant, not waterproof β years of gym sessions degrade the drivers and the mic ports. Crackle that started after heavy sweat exposure, a drop in a puddle, or a trip through the washing machine is corrosion until proven otherwise.
Keeping the Crackle From Coming Back
Whatever fixes your current crackle, a little maintenance keeps the next one away. Wipe the buds down after workouts and let them dry before they go back in the case β sealing sweaty AirPods into a closed charging case is how moisture gets trapped against the electronics. Clean the case's charging contacts occasionally with a dry swab; grimy contacts cause the intermittent-charging problems that often get misdiagnosed as audio faults. Replace stretched or torn ear tips, since a bad seal makes ANC work harder and exaggerates artifacts. And every month or so, do the thirty-second mesh brush before wax has time to compact into a plug.
Repair, Replace, or Apple?
- Under AppleCare or the Gen-1 service program? Use Apple β a covered swap is the easy win.
- Out of coverage? Apple's answer is a paid unit replacement, not a repair. Before paying for that, it's worth a professional look: debris deep-cleaning, tip-seal issues, and case charging-contact problems are all serviceable, and a proper diagnosis is cheap certainty. Bring both buds and the case β crackling paired with fast battery drain or connection drops often traces to the case, not the buds.
- One AirPod also quieter than the other? That's usually the same debris/corrosion story at a different stage β we covered it separately in our guide to fixing one quiet AirPod.
