One AirPod sounds noticeably quieter than the other. Maybe one ear is full volume and the other sounds like it's wrapped in a sock. This is one of the most common AirPod complaints we hear at Geek Guys, and the good news is that about 70% of the time the fix takes 5 minutes and costs nothing.
Here are the five most likely causes, in order, with the fix for each.
1. Wax and Debris Blocking the Mesh (70% of Cases)
This is by far the most common cause. AirPods sit in your ear canal, and earwax, dust, and skin flakes accumulate on the small speaker mesh on the front of each AirPod. Once enough builds up, sound gets muffled or noticeably quieter. Usually one side gets worse than the other because of asymmetric wax production (it's normal).
- Use a soft-bristled dry toothbrush โ gently brush the mesh on both AirPods over a clean surface
- For stubborn wax, lightly press blue tack or museum putty against the mesh and pull away โ this lifts wax out of the mesh without pushing it deeper
- For AirPods Pro tips, remove the silicone tips and wash them with mild soapy water; dry completely before reattaching
- Do not use water, alcohol, or any liquid directly on the speaker mesh โ it can damage the speaker driver behind it
- Do not push anything sharp (pins, toothpicks) into the mesh โ you'll puncture it and the AirPod is then permanently damaged
Most customers are stunned at how much sound returns after a proper cleaning. If you've never cleaned your AirPods in 2+ years, expect a noticeable difference.
2. Audio Balance Setting Got Adjusted
iOS has an accessibility setting for audio balance โ it shifts the audio left or right. It's easy to accidentally toggle, and it persists across all your audio, not just AirPods.
3. Disconnected Speaker Coil (After Drops or Water)
Inside each AirPod is a tiny speaker driver connected to the main board by a fragile flex cable. Drops on hard surfaces, or moisture from rain or sweat, can cause this connection to fail or the driver itself to short. Symptom: one side dramatically quieter or producing distorted sound, and cleaning doesn't help.
This is repairable in some cases โ we can open the AirPod, inspect the speaker connection, and reseat or replace the driver. AirPods are not designed to be opened without destruction, so this is microsoldering-level work, but we do it.
4. Bluetooth Pairing Glitch
Sometimes the AirPods themselves are fine, but the connection to your phone or device is sending unequal audio. This is more common after iOS updates or when switching between many paired devices (phone, iPad, MacBook, Apple TV).
- Put both AirPods in the case and close the lid for 30 seconds
- Open Settings โ Bluetooth on your iPhone, find your AirPods, tap the "i" icon, scroll down and tap "Forget This Device"
- Open the AirPods case near your phone with the lid open
- Hold the small button on the back of the case for 15 seconds until the LED flashes amber, then white
- Re-pair them as new
5. One AirPod Battery Is Failing
AirPod batteries are not user-replaceable and they do degrade over time. After about 2-3 years, the lithium-ion battery in one or both AirPods can lose significant capacity. The symptom is usually a one-side battery that dies within 30 minutes while the other lasts hours โ but in some cases a partially failed battery causes the audio amplifier to underperform, making that side quieter.
Apple's official position on AirPod batteries: replace the AirPod. The way Apple handles it is by giving you a "new" AirPod (or pair) for a service fee โ they don't actually repair the battery. Some third-party shops (us included) can do battery replacement on AirPods Pro 1 and original AirPods, but the work is delicate. For AirPods 2 and AirPods Pro 2, replacement is generally still the practical route.
The Diagnostic Order We Use
- Clean both AirPods thoroughly (you do this; we can do it for free in shop)
- Check iOS audio balance setting
- Re-pair the AirPods completely
- Test with a different audio source (a friend's iPhone, a Mac) to confirm it's the AirPods and not the device
- If the issue persists after all of the above โ it's hardware, and either we open them up or Apple replaces them
What About AirPods Max?
AirPods Max have larger speakers and more accessible internals than the in-ear models. One-side-quiet issues on AirPods Max are usually fixable โ driver replacement, ear cushion debris, or board-level work all in scope for us. Don't write them off if Apple quoted you a high replacement cost.
