You slide a game disc into your PS5 and nothing happens. Or it whirs for a few seconds, makes an ugly grinding sound, and ejects the disc back out. Or โ€” worst case โ€” the disc is stuck inside and won't come out at all.

PS5 disc drive issues have become the #2 PlayStation repair we see at Geek Guys, just behind HDMI port damage. The drive itself is mechanically complex, and several common failure modes have specific fixes. Here's how to figure out which one is yours.

First: Identify the Symptom

The exact behavior tells you a lot about the cause.

The PS5 won't accept the disc at all

You push the disc in and it just won't go โ€” the motor doesn't engage to pull it in, or it sticks halfway. Usually one of three causes: stuck eject sensor, foreign object inside the slot, or a misaligned drive after the PS5 was moved/laid on its side.

The PS5 takes the disc but ejects it immediately

Disc goes in, drive whirs, then it spits the disc back out within a few seconds. Most common cause: the eject button is being triggered by something โ€” either a stuck physical button or a sensor reading. Sometimes it's a firmware glitch.

The PS5 accepts the disc but won't read it

Drive accepts the disc, you can hear it spinning, but the game/movie doesn't appear or you get a "cannot read disc" error. Usually the laser lens is dirty, the disc is scratched, or the laser itself is failing.

Loud grinding or clicking noises

Mechanical damage โ€” usually the disc loading mechanism. Often the result of the PS5 being moved or jostled while a disc was inserted, or the drive being misaligned when manually serviced. Stop using it; you can damage your discs.

Disc is stuck inside, won't eject

The mechanism that pulls discs in works, but the eject doesn't. Sometimes a software-only issue, sometimes a broken eject motor or sensor. Don't force it.

Things to Try at Home (Safely)

1. Power cycle the PS5

The fix for an embarrassing number of "broken" PS5 disc drives. Hold the power button for 7 seconds until the PS5 turns off completely (not rest mode). Unplug the power cable. Wait 60 seconds. Plug back in and try the disc again. About 15% of "stuck disc" calls are fixed by this alone.

2. Manual eject (for stuck discs)

The PS5 has a manual eject mechanism โ€” a small screw underneath one of the side panels.

How to do it safely: Turn off the PS5 completely and unplug it. Remove the white side panel (the one with the disc drive logo). Look for a small hole near the disc drive area. Insert a Phillips screwdriver and rotate counter-clockwise โ€” slowly. The disc will gradually emerge. Don't force it; if it's not turning, stop and bring it in. Forcing the manual eject can damage the gears.

3. Update PS5 system software

Sony has released firmware updates that fix specific disc-drive bugs, including some "instant eject" glitches in early PS5 models. Check Settings โ†’ System โ†’ System Software โ†’ System Software Update.

4. Try a different game/movie

If only one disc fails to read but others work, that disc is scratched or damaged โ€” not your PS5.

What NOT to try Do not insert anything into the slot to "help" a disc โ€” paper, plastic, your finger. Do not run the PS5 on its side if it was designed for vertical orientation, or vice versa, with a disc inside. Do not open the PS5 housing if you don't know what you're doing โ€” there's a lot of fragile flex cable inside and the warranty is voided immediately.

When It's a Real Repair

Failed laser lens

The laser that reads the disc has a finite lifespan. Symptoms: discs spin but won't read, behavior gets worse with newer/higher-density discs (Blu-rays fail before DVDs). Cleaning the lens sometimes helps temporarily; replacement is the permanent fix. We do this regularly at Geek Guys.

Disc drive board failure

The small board inside the drive that controls motors and reads the laser can fail outright, often signaled by the drive making no sounds at all and the system not recognizing a disc was inserted. Board-level repair or full drive assembly replacement.

Mechanical damage to the loading mechanism

Gears, belts, and alignment can be damaged by physical impact or improper handling. Symptoms: grinding noises, discs going in crooked, partial ejects. Mechanical repair work โ€” feasible, but more time-intensive than other PS5 repairs.

Drive paired to a different console

This one trips a lot of people up. The PS5 disc drive is electronically paired to the motherboard at the factory. If someone swapped in a drive from another PS5 (a common DIY mistake), it won't work. Sony does have a re-pairing process, but it requires specific tools. We do this regularly.

Is It Worth Fixing?

Almost always yes. PS5s are expensive, and the disc drive is usually a small fraction of the replacement console cost. The exception is if your PS5 also has HDMI port damage, controller pairing issues, or other problems stacking up โ€” at that point we'll look at the total repair cost and tell you honestly whether to repair or replace.

One detail worth knowing: Sony's official repair service requires you to ship the console to them and is rarely covered after the first-year warranty. Local repair at Geek Guys is typically faster and often cheaper for out-of-warranty consoles.
