A flickering laptop screen — or one with lines marching across it — has exactly four usual suspects: the panel, the cable feeding it, the GPU driving it, or the software driving the GPU. The trick is that all four can look similar at a glance, and they range from a free fix to a board-level repair. The good news: two simple tests you can do at home split the field cleanly, and you'll walk into any repair conversation knowing roughly what's wrong.
The Test That Cuts the Problem in Half
Before anything else, connect the laptop to an external monitor or TV via HDMI or USB-C. Then compare:
- External screen is clean, built-in screen misbehaves: the GPU is producing a perfect image — the fault is somewhere in the display path: the panel itself, the eDP cable feeding it, or the connectors at either end. This is the more common and generally cheaper-to-fix outcome.
- External screen shows the same flicker, lines, or artifacts: the problem is upstream of both screens — GPU hardware, its power delivery on the motherboard, or drivers.

If Only the Built-In Screen Is Bad
The hinge-angle test points at the cable
Slowly tilt the lid through its full range while watching the screen. If the flicker starts, stops, or changes at certain angles — or a gentle twist of the lid's corner provokes it — the prime suspect is the eDP display cable, which runs from the motherboard up through the hinge to the panel. It flexes with every open and close, and after a few thousand cycles the conductors fatigue and make intermittent contact. Worn, stiff hinges accelerate this dramatically: instead of a smooth sweep, the cable gets sharply creased at one spot, and in the worst cases a seized hinge saws through the cable insulation entirely. If your hinge grinds, snaps, or has visibly cracked the case around it, that's part of the same repair.
Reading the lines themselves
- Thin, razor-sharp lines in fixed pixel columns — often one pixel wide, sometimes in colors — that appear even on the BIOS/startup screen: classic panel failure, usually where the driver ribbon bonds to the glass. Pressure damage (a pen left on the keyboard, a tight backpack) produces the same result, sometimes with dark blotches.
- Lines or static that shimmer, jump, or come and go with movement or warmth: more consistent with a cable or connector fault.
- A dim image you can only see under a flashlight: backlight failure, a different repair from either of the above.
If the External Screen Is Bad Too
Software and drivers first
Full-screen flicker (rather than lines) that appeared after an update is often a driver or refresh-rate issue. On Windows, roll back or clean-reinstall the graphics driver, and check the refresh rate in Display settings — a mismatch after an update causes system-wide flicker. One classic Windows tell: if the Task Manager window flickers along with everything else, it's likely a driver; if everything except the mouse cursor and Task Manager flickers, it's often a misbehaving app.
Then GPU hardware
If artifacts appear on both screens in BIOS too, or get worse as the machine heats up, you're looking at GPU-side hardware: the graphics chip, its memory, or — very commonly — the power circuitry feeding it. Heat is usually the accelerant; years of thermal cycling stress the solder and the surrounding components. This is not a "replace the screen" problem, and a parts-cannon approach gets expensive fast.

Cable replacement means opening the display assembly and rerouting a new cable through the hinge; panel replacement means matching the exact panel spec (resolution, connector, backlight type — laptops of the same model often shipped with different panels).
