We fix gaming consoles every day. PS5s, Xboxes, Switches โ they all come through our door with problems that could've been prevented. After seeing the same issues over and over, we figured it was time to share what we've learned.
This isn't your typical "RGB everything and buy a $400 chair" setup guide. These are practical tips from people who literally take apart gaming hardware for a living. Some of this stuff will save your gear. All of it will make your setup better.
1. Give Your Console Room to Breathe
This is the single most impactful thing you can do for your console's longevity, and it costs exactly zero dollars.
Every current-gen console is basically a small computer generating serious heat. The PS5, Xbox Series X, and even the Switch dock need airflow to keep their internals cool. When they can't get it, they overheat, throttle performance, and eventually suffer hardware damage.
The rules are simple:
- 4-6 inches of clearance on all sides โ especially around intake and exhaust vents
- Never put a console inside a closed cabinet โ that's basically a slow cooker for electronics
- Hard, flat surface only โ no carpet, no blankets, no towels. These block vents and trap heat
- Don't stack consoles or put things on top of them โ yes, we've seen PS5s with books stacked on the exhaust vent
2. Invest in a Real Surge Protector
This is the tip that could save you hundreds of dollars, and almost nobody follows it.
A power strip is not a surge protector. That $8 strip you grabbed at the dollar store? It's an extension cord with extra outlets. It will do absolutely nothing when a power surge hits โ and in South Jersey, summer storms bring plenty of those.
A proper surge protector absorbs voltage spikes before they reach your gear. Look for:
- Joule rating of 2000+ for a gaming setup โ the higher the number, the more energy it can absorb
- UL 1449 certification โ this is the safety standard that actually matters
- Indicator light showing protection is active โ surge protectors wear out over time. When the light goes off, replace it
- Enough outlets for your setup โ daisy-chaining power strips is a fire hazard, not a life hack
3. Cable Management Isn't Just Aesthetic
Yeah, clean cables look great on Reddit. But there are actual practical reasons to manage your cables:
- Tripping hazard = broken ports. A tangled HDMI cable that someone snags with their foot can rip the HDMI port right off your console's motherboard. We do this repair constantly. It's a microsoldering job. It's not cheap.
- Cables draped over vents block airflow. That power cable draped across your Xbox's top vent? It's contributing to overheating.
- Strain relief matters. Cables plugged in at sharp angles put stress on the connector. Over time, this weakens the port. Route cables so they come in at a natural angle โ not yanked sideways.
Easy cable management wins:
- Velcro cable ties (not zip ties โ you'll want to adjust them later)
- Adhesive cable clips along the back of your desk or entertainment center
- A small cable management box to hide the power strip and excess cable length
- Leave a little slack โ cables pulled taut are cables waiting to break something
4. Monitor and TV Positioning
This one's less about protecting your gear and more about protecting you. If you're gaming for hours (no judgment โ we do it too), ergonomics actually matter.
For TV gaming (couch setup):
- Center of the screen at eye level when seated โ most TVs are mounted too high. Your neck will thank you.
- Distance: about 1.5x the diagonal screen size โ for a 55" TV, sit about 7 feet away
- Reduce glare โ position the TV so windows aren't directly behind you or reflecting on screen. Blackout curtains are a gamer's best friend.
For desk gaming (monitor setup):
- Top of the monitor at or slightly below eye level โ looking up at a monitor is a fast track to neck pain
- Arm's length away โ about 20-26 inches from your face
- Slight tilt back (10-20 degrees) โ reduces eye strain
- If you're using a TV as a monitor, enable Game Mode โ this disables post-processing and reduces input lag significantly
5. The Cleaning Schedule You Should Actually Follow
We get it โ cleaning your setup isn't exciting. But dust is the number one preventable cause of console overheating, and pet hair is a close second. Here's a realistic schedule that won't feel like a chore:
Wipe down your desk/TV stand. Quick dust of console surfaces with a microfiber cloth.
Compressed air into console vents (short bursts). Wipe down controllers. Check cables for damage.
Move consoles, clean behind and under them. Check surge protector indicator. Clean monitor/TV screen properly.
Internal cleaning โ open console and clean fan/heatsink. Or drop it off at Geek Guys and we'll do it for you.
If you have pets, double the frequency. Cat hair and PS5 fans are natural enemies.
6. Protect Your Controllers Too
Your controller takes more abuse than any other piece of your setup. A few simple habits can extend its life dramatically:
- Wash your hands before gaming โ oils, food residue, and sweat accelerate stick drift and button wear. Yes, we sound like your mom. She was right.
- Don't death-grip the controller โ tension on the sticks causes faster wear. Relax your hands. You'll actually play better too.
- Store controllers on a shelf or stand, not the floor โ controllers on the floor get stepped on. We've seen it.
- Clean around the joysticks periodically โ use a dry toothbrush to clear debris from around the stick base. This helps prevent drift.
7. Back Up Your Saves
This isn't a setup tip exactly, but we're including it because we've had too many heartbreaking conversations with customers who lost years of save data.
- PS5: PS Plus members get cloud saves automatically. Check Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings to confirm it's on.
- Xbox: All saves sync to the cloud automatically with an Xbox account. Just make sure you're signed in.
- Switch: Requires Nintendo Switch Online for cloud saves. Note: some games (looking at you, Animal Crossing) don't support cloud saves.
When a console comes in for repair, we always try to preserve data. But if a drive fails or a motherboard is toast, those saves might be gone. Cloud backups cost nothing extra if you already have an online subscription. Turn them on.
Your Setup Is an Investment โ Treat It Like One
Between the console, TV or monitor, controllers, headset, and games โ a modern gaming setup easily represents $1,000-2,000+ of gear. A little preventive care goes a long way toward keeping all of it running smoothly.
And when something does break (because eventually, something always does), you know where to find us.
