Cracked iPad screens are the single most common repair we see at Geek Guys in Haddonfield. iPads are big, expensive, and unfortunately easy to drop — usually face-down onto something hard.
The hardest question after the crack happens isn't "where do I get it fixed" — it's "should I bother fixing it?" The answer depends entirely on which iPad you have, how old it is, and exactly what's broken. Here's how we walk customers through the decision.
Step 1: Identify Your iPad Model
Apple's iPad lineup is genuinely confusing — there are five active product lines (iPad, iPad mini, iPad Air, iPad Pro 11", iPad Pro 13"), each with multiple generations, plus older discontinued models still in use. The model number determines parts availability and repair cost.
Step 2: Identify What Actually Broke
"Cracked screen" can mean several different things, and the repair scope is very different for each.
Just the glass is cracked
Touch still works, display still works perfectly underneath. Common on iPad models where the glass digitizer is separate from the LCD. Repair is straightforward and usually the most affordable option.
Glass cracked, touch acting weird
Glass is broken, AND the digitizer is damaged — touch is unresponsive in some areas, ghost touches in others. This is still a screen-assembly repair, but the digitizer specifically needs replacement.
Glass cracked, lines or dead pixels on screen
The LCD or OLED panel underneath is also damaged. This is more expensive because you're replacing both the digitizer and the display assembly. On newer iPads where these are fused (iPad Pro, iPad Air recent gens), it's a full display assembly replacement.
Screen looks fine but won't turn on / shows black
Could be the LCD backlight, the display data connector, or the logic board. Diagnose first before assuming this is a "screen" issue.
Step 3: Repair-or-Replace Math by Model
Here's the general framework we use, based on what an equivalent used or refurbished iPad costs versus what a new screen actually costs to install professionally.
| iPad Model | Approximate Age | Generally Worth Repairing? |
|---|---|---|
| iPad Pro (11" or 13") 2024+ | 0-2 years | Yes — these hold value |
| iPad Pro 2020-2022 | 3-5 years | Usually yes — depends on condition |
| iPad Air (5th, 6th gen) | 0-4 years | Yes |
| iPad (9th, 10th, 11th gen) | 0-3 years | Yes — affordable parts |
| iPad mini (6th, 7th gen) | 0-4 years | Yes |
| iPad mini (5th gen and older) | 5+ years | Gray zone — depends on damage |
| Original iPad Pro 12.9" (2015-2017) | 8+ years | Usually no — replace |
| iPad 5th/6th gen | 7+ years | Usually no — replace |
Two key factors that shift this decision:
- What's on it? If the iPad has irreplaceable photos, kid's drawings in Procreate, or work files not backed up, repair often makes sense regardless of age — partly to preserve access to the data.
- What's the alternative? If you'd just buy a $329 base iPad, the math is different than if you'd buy a $1,099 iPad Pro. The repair only "wins" against comparable replacements.
Should I Try the Apple Store?
Apple offers screen repair for most iPads, but it's expensive and they generally only do "full device exchange" rather than panel-level repair on older models. The Cherry Hill Mall Apple Store will quote you a flat exchange fee for most iPads, and they often want to send the device away for several days.
The Geek Guys advantage:
- Same-day repair on most common models
- We keep your data — same iPad goes home with you
- Often more affordable for out-of-warranty iPads (AppleCare+ usually still wins if it's still active)
- We're in Haddonfield — easier than a trip to the mall and a Genius Bar appointment

What About Insurance?
If you have AppleCare+, use it — the deductible for accidental damage is usually less than out-of-pocket repair. If you have third-party insurance (Asurion, Squaretrade, your credit card), check the actual deductible and process — sometimes they require sending the iPad away for weeks. Many customers find local repair faster and not much more expensive than the insurance deductible plus shipping time.
Preventing the Next One
After we fix your iPad, we strongly recommend two things:
- A real case with raised corners — Apple's Smart Folio doesn't protect against drops. Otterbox, Survivor, and similar drop-rated cases dramatically reduce the risk.
- A tempered glass screen protector — it won't prevent every crack, but it absorbs minor impacts and is much cheaper to replace than the iPad screen.
