Every August our Haddonfield shop fills up with the same faces: parents holding a kid's phone with a spiderwebbed screen, students dropping off a laptop that suddenly won't hold a charge, and college freshmen realizing the iPad they need for classes has been half-broken since June. Back-to-school season is our busiest stretch of the year, and it's not a coincidence.

Summer is hard on devices. Phones get dropped at the beach and the pool, laptops sit in hot cars, and everything spends three months rattling around in backpacks and beach bags. The damage gets ignored while school's out — until the week before the semester, when suddenly that cracked screen has to work for real. Here's what we see, and why it's worth handling now instead of the first week of classes.

The August Rush Is Real — Beat It

The last two weeks of August and the first week of September are the busiest we get. Once school starts, a broken device isn't an annoyance — it's a missed assignment, a lost textbook login, or a kid who can't reach you after practice. Everyone tries to fix everything at the same time, and that's when wait times stretch out.

The fix is simple: bring it in early. Many common repairs are same-day when you catch us before the crush. We always start with a free diagnosis and back the work with a 30-day warranty, so there's no downside to getting it looked at now rather than in the chaos of week one.

Do it before Labor Day If a device has any issue you've been putting off all summer — a crack, a weak battery, a flaky charging port — the smart move is to handle it in the next couple of weeks. We serve families across Haddonfield, Cherry Hill, Voorhees, and Marlton, and August is when everyone shows up at once.

Cracked Screens That Got Ignored All Summer

By far the most common back-to-school repair is the cracked screen someone's been living with since spring. A hairline crack seems harmless until it spreads, starts cutting fingers, or the touch layer gives out mid-crack. On phones and tablets, a damaged screen also lets moisture and dust into the device — which turns a cheap fix into an expensive one if you wait too long.

We replace cracked screens on iPhones, Samsung and Android phones, iPads, and laptops. For the most common models, screen swaps are same-day. If it's an iPhone or an iPad headed back into a busy school year, getting a fresh, undamaged screen on it now saves a lot of grief later.

Batteries That Won't Last a School Day

A device that needs a charger by lunchtime is a device that isn't ready for school. Phone and tablet batteries wear out after a couple of years, and it happens gradually enough that you don't notice until the thing dies at 2 p.m. with homework still to do.

Battery replacement is one of the highest-value things you can do for an older device. A phone or iPad that was struggling to make it to dinner can go right back to all-day life on a fresh battery — no need to buy a whole new device. We handle battery service on iPhones, iPads, Android phones, and laptops, and most are quick turnarounds.

Tablets that won't hold a charge

iPads and Android tablets are workhorses for the school year — reading, notes, homework apps — and a tablet that drains fast or won't charge at all is a real problem. Sometimes it's the battery, sometimes it's the charging port (more on that next), and sometimes it's a worn-out charging cable the student's been fighting with. A free diagnosis tells us which, so you're not guessing.

Charging Ports Full of Summer Backpack Lint

Here's one almost nobody thinks of: if a phone or tablet suddenly charges slowly, only charges at a certain angle, or won't charge unless you wiggle the cable, the culprit is often lint packed into the charging port. A whole summer riding around in the bottom of a backpack or beach bag compresses pocket fuzz and sand into the port until the cable can't seat properly.

People assume the port is broken and the phone is done. Often it just needs a proper cleaning. It's one of the fastest things we do, and it's worth ruling out before anyone panics about a bigger repair.

Back Up the Data Before the Hand-Me-Down

A lot of back-to-school devices are hand-me-downs — mom's old iPhone becomes the kid's first phone, an older iPad gets passed to a younger sibling, a retired laptop goes off to the dorm. Before you wipe and reset any of them, make sure the photos, documents, and app data are backed up. Once a device is reset, that data is gone.

We can pull everything important off an old device before it changes hands, and if a device has already failed — won't turn on, screen dead, water damage — our data recovery service can often still get the files off. Better to have the backup and not need it.

Don't reset first, back up first The single most common way people lose photos is resetting an old phone to hand it down before saving what's on it. If you're not sure the backup worked, bring it in and we'll confirm it before anything gets erased.

Laptops and Chromebooks for the School Year

Laptops carry the heaviest load once school starts. Cracked screens, dead batteries, broken hinges, and failing keyboards are all common after a summer of rough handling. We fix laptops and MacBooks — screens, batteries, charging problems, keyboards, and the liquid spills that seem to happen the first week back.

If it's a school-issued Chromebook, check with your district first, since some require repairs go through their own program. For personally owned laptops and MacBooks, we'll get it school-ready. And a laptop that's been running hot and slow all summer is a good candidate for a tune-up before it has to carry a full course load.

Already at College? Mail It In

Plenty of students are already gone by mid-August, and a broken device 200 miles away feels impossible to deal with. It's not. Our mail-in repair service lets a student ship a phone, tablet, or laptop from anywhere in the country. We diagnose it free, tell you what it needs before we start, fix it, and ship it back — same 30-day warranty as an in-shop repair.

It's a lifesaver for parents: your kid's phone gets fixed properly without them having to find a random shop in a new town, and you know exactly who worked on it.

Get School-Ready Before the Rush

Cracked screens, tired batteries, dead charging ports, and laptops that need to survive the semester — we handle all of it. Free diagnosis, 30-day warranty, same-day on many repairs.
